What exactly are microfibers?

Was sind eigentlich Mikrofasern?

YunJing Chan |

The term microfiber includes all fibers that are finer than 1 dtex. The tex is a unit that relates the weight of linear textile structures to their length. 1 dtex means that 10,000 meters of a yarn weigh exactly 1 gram. All microfibers therefore weigh less than 1 gram per 10,000 meters . Microfibers can be up to 100 times thinner than human hair . The fibers are usually made from plastics, such as polyester or nylon . Researchers have now also been able to produce microfibers from cellulose.

Properties of microfibers

In addition to their fineness, microfibers are characterized by the fact that they are exceptionally soft and retain their shape . In addition, microfibers do not form lint and dry extremely quickly . This is why bed linen and sportswear made of microfibers are also very popular. The slight static charge of microfiber cloths can be used when dusting. Dust fluff is attracted to the cloths and sticks to the cloth by itself. This makes cleaning much easier.

Microfiber cloths also remove any dirt

Other dirt particles are also absorbed very well by the cloths. Due to the close mesh of the fibers, microfibers have a high dirt absorption capacity . This means that the use of cleaning agents can usually be avoided altogether. A light moistening with lukewarm water is often sufficient for cleaning. In the case of heavy soiling, an alcohol-water solution or cleaning alcohol can increase the cleaning power.

Also ideal for all surfaces

Microfibers are suitable for almost all surfaces . Microfiber cloths are particularly useful on windows and mirrors , as they leave significantly less residue behind when cleaning than conventional cleaning cloths. They should only be avoided on particularly soft surfaces. The high degree of hardness of the fibers can cause microscopic scratches , which can make the surface appear duller over time. A well-known example of this is high-gloss kitchen fronts, which should not be cleaned with conventional microfiber cloths . Or all products with piano lacquer, as these surfaces are very vulnerable.
