What exactly is the EU Ecolabel and what significance does it have

Was genau ist eigentlich das EU-Ecolabel und welche Bedeutung hat es

YunJing Chan |

The EU Ecolabel was created by the European Commission in 1992 and identifies products that are more environmentally friendly compared to similar products . Since 2000, it has also been possible to label services with the EU Ecolabel.

Philosophy behind the EU Ecolabel

In particular, the EU Ecolabel is intended to make it clear to consumers that the product or service they have chosen is more environmentally friendly and healthier than a comparable product. The range of product groups is enormous , ranging from cleaning products and textiles to paints and varnishes, campsites and accommodation facilities. However, there is a small limit, and it is still not possible to award the EU Ecolabel to food, drinks, medicines and medical devices. This label is valid in all 28 EU member states, including Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Turkey.

goal of the EU Ecolabel

The European Commission's main aim is to increase the number of EU Ecolabel products/services in order to offer a greater choice of environmentally friendly products and service providers. The more environmentally friendly products and services there are on the market, the greater the choice. This means that consumers may not have to change their usual favorite product and still do something good for the environment . The European Commission wants to make the application process easier for companies by simplifying the documents. This means that companies have no reservations about submitting applications and the number of applications will hopefully soon skyrocket.

How a product can receive the EU Ecolabel

As mentioned, in order to acquire such a label, an application must first be submitted. Depending on the size of the company and the product, such an application can cost up to €1,200. Once the application has been submitted, it is checked whether all criteria are met. Since this is a voluntary label, the criteria are much stricter than the legal criteria. If everything is in order, an EU Ecolabel is awarded.
