The topic of disposable gloves is a more extensive topic than expected. There are disposable gloves in many different materials, qualities and strengths, each of which is tailored to the area of application. In many work areas, disposable gloves are part of the standard work equipment. This blog entry describes the different variants in more detail and explains which material is suitable for which application.
What are the differences?
Disposable gloves are roughly classified according to the material they are made of. The three main materials are: nitrile , latex and vinyl . Choosing the right disposable glove is not easy because, in addition to the right material, there are a number of other factors to consider. The quality class plays a major role . Disposable gloves are often available in basic, plus or premium quality. The main difference here is the thickness of the material. Another criterion can be the length of the glove . Depending on the area of application, you can normally choose between 24 cm, 26 cm and 28 cm glove length.
Important for some areas – compliance with the standard
Furthermore, certain legal requirements must be met for certain areas. For medical use, the gloves must comply with the EN 455 standard , and for handling chemicals, the EN 374 standard applies. For use in the food sector, a food safety declaration must be available. This criterion should not be ignored when purchasing, as this can otherwise lead to legal difficulties, as already mentioned.
Further selection criteria for disposable gloves
In addition to these criteria, there are a few others, but these are more a matter of taste for the person using them. For example, there are powdered and powder-free disposable gloves . Some disposable gloves are more stretchy or thicker than others. This wide range of products covers all personal requirements. The topic of material has only been mentioned briefly at the beginning, but the following section is about choosing the right material. The three different materials and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed in more detail.
The latex disposable glove – a classic
The probably best known and previously most commonly used material is latex. Latex is a natural material that is obtained from rubber trees. Its advantages include very high elastic properties and resistance to many acids and alkalis . Latex gloves often offer a very good fit and excellent tactile sensitivity . In addition to the advantages, there are unfortunately also some disadvantages. The latex proteins can trigger allergies if used frequently . In addition, latex is not resistant to oils and solvents. Disposable gloves made of latex are used in the following areas: medicine, care, catering, cosmetics or tattoo studios.
The Nitrile Disposable Glove – Synthetic Alternative to Latex
Another material that disposable gloves are made of is nitrile. Nitrile is a synthetic rubber that is free of proteins . This means that nitrile gloves cause fewer allergies and are therefore much more skin-friendly than latex. In addition to their high elasticity and grip, the gloves are also resistant to chemicals . They are also more puncture-resistant than latex and vinyl gloves. The only disadvantage is the lower elasticity and comfort compared to latex gloves. Nitrile gloves are used in the following areas: medicine, catering, cosmetics and crafts.
The vinyl disposable glove – the most cost-effective option
Last but not least, vinyl is often used, which is made from polyvinyl chloride. This variant is significantly cheaper and also free of proteins . The glove is soft and pleasant on the skin and resistant to acids and alkalis . These gloves are recommended if they have to be changed often. Unfortunately, vinyl gloves are less precise and elastic than the other two materials. They often contain plasticizers which are fat-soluble . This means that they are only partially suitable for the food industry. Disposable vinyl gloves are used in the following areas: care, private households, hair salons or industry.
