Cleaning Plexiglas - this is how it's done correctly

Plexiglas reinigen - so geht es richtig

YunJing Chan |

Plexiglass or acrylic glass is a plastic that is transparent and has glass-like properties. Compared to real glass, acrylic glass is more shatter-proof and cheaper. This makes it an excellent replacement for glass. In our everyday lives, acrylic glass can be found in picture frames, glazing, signs or room dividers. Despite its similarity to real glass, a few aspects must be taken into account when cleaning acrylic glass. Tips for cleaning acrylic glass are listed below.

The right cleaner for acrylic glass

Acrylic glass is a thermoplastic that is not compatible with all cleaning agents . You should avoid organic substances, benzene, alcohol, petrol containing benzene or diluted synthetic resin products. Light to medium alkalis, acid resistance or grease and oil are very well tolerated.

Which cleaner is suitable for which type of dirt?

The cleaning procedure depends on the degree of dirt. Different dirt types occur outside than inside. A pressure washer is recommended for outside use. A suitable cleaner can be added to the spray water as required. When cleaning, make sure to set the pressure between 50 and 100 bar. Do not use mechanical cleaning devices as these can cause scratches on the surface as the rotating disc drags the dirt across the surface.

Interior cleaning different than exterior

Cleaning the inside of acrylic glass is also very easy. A microfiber cloth is mainly required for cleaning. For light soiling, you only need the cloth and lukewarm water. This is an excellent way to remove dirt. However, if there is more stubborn dirt, you can dilute acetic acid or vinegar essence with water and use it to help. Never use glass cleaners or scouring agents , as these can scratch or even damage the surface. If you do not have an acidic cleaner to hand, you can also use an oil, such as vegetable oil. To do this, apply the oil to the surface and rinse it off with lukewarm water. The surface must then be thoroughly polished.
